The RMPL (Recorded Music Performance Limited) had applied through the Registrar of Copyrights, before the Central Government, for registration as a Copyright Society under Section 33 of the Copyright Act, 1957 dated 26.03.2018. On 18th June 2021, the Central Government granted registration to RMPL as a copyright society for sound recording works. PPL India has been established much before RMPL and holds more expertise in sound recordings works. Its members include T-series, Saregama, Sony Music and various other top music labels. The excessive delay in granting registration to RMPL as a copyright society is violative of Rule 49 of the Copyright Rules, 2013, which states that the government should decide for registration of a copyright society within 60 days from the date of its receipt and in this case, it took the government three years to register RMPL as a copyright society. The registration of this society is the first amendment after the year 2012 to the Copyright Act, 1957.
