India and Japan agree for greater cooperation in Patent verification

Indian and Japan entered into an agreement under a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on Industrial Property during the 4th review meeting of Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) pilot programme, between the Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and Japan Patent Office (JPO). Both the countries have agreed to recognize each other’s offices to act mutually as competent International Searching and International Preliminary Examining Authority (ISA/IPEA) for any international patent application filed with them.

India-Japan have also decided to hold meeting at least once a year to discuss the functioning of PPH programme which would lead to reduction of time to dispose patent applications, improvement of search quality for patent applications and an opportunity for Indian inventors to get accelerated examination of their patent applications in Japan.
