Herbal medicine ‘BAU Birsin’ granted patent

Indian Patent Office, Kolkata granted patent to herbal medicine ‘BAU Birsin’ useful for management and treatment of several ailments like cough and cold, body ache and fever. This medicine has been made by a scientist namely Dr. Kaushal Kumar of Birsa Agricultural University (BAU), Ranchi. Dr. Kumar said that the medicine has been prepared with the leaves and bark of a tree named ‘Vitex peduncularis’ also known as ‘Charigorwa’, found in the hilly regions of Jharkhand. He further stated that if the demand for the medicine increases, farmers can grow the plant as a commercial crop.

An agreement containing the nitty gritty of the commercial utilization of the invention with the National Biodiversity Authority, Chennai is underway. This medicine if stored under recommended conditions is effective for a period of two years. Dr. Kumar has been persistently working hard for 10 years for this patent and has been highly praised by the Vice-Chancellor of BAU, University.
