Google has filed a patent application in the USPTO, for its category of ‘foldable devices’ that would launch in the market sometime in the future. The patent filed has been published by the USPTO titled ‘Hinge Mechanism by Gear Set with Slider for Foldable Display Device’ on February 4, 2021. Google had begun working on foldable devices with a non-provisional patent back in the year 2017. This Google patent highlights the short-comings of conventional hinge mechanism and claims to offer solution in a device which may include ‘hinge-assembly having a slider mechanism and a set of gears.’ But it is unlikely to say that the patent is ready because Google has just filed a patent which means the company’s engineering team is still working on the said device. This comes after smartphone brands like Xiaomi, Huawei and Samsung filed patent applications for their respective foldable devices.
