Even three days after harvest, Madurai Marikolunthu remains fresh. Theni, Andipatti, Sivagangai, and Thirupathur are just a few of the locales in and around Madurai district where this Marikolunthu is grown. The Madurai Marikolunthu, along with Madurai Malli, is used to adorn Goddess Meenakshi and Sundareswarar's palanquin during their 'Thirukalyanam', which is held every year during the "Chithirai Festival" in April. It is also used to treat illnesses. The application of geographical indication is under examination.
