UF Conor McGregor C star Conor McGregor loses trademark fight with clothing firm

The well-known UFC star Conor McGregor “The Notorious” has lost a three year long legal battle against a clothing firm called McGregor. The legal tussle between the two parties was a trademark battle concerning the mark ‘McGregor’. The clothing firm was founded in the year 1921, by David Doniger, and had been in the business since the past 100 years. The business is still going strong, even after so many years and is now owned by a Dutch Company. The controversy had started in the year 2017 when Conor McGregor had decided to launch a

clothing and sportswear line under the mark ‘McGregor’, which is also his surname. His initial plan was to launch the same across Europe. However, his plans were vehemently opposed by the clothing firm with the claims that people may confuse the products of the UFC star with the products of the clothing brand. An interim injunction was also passed in favour of the clothing firm in 2018, wherein the sale of Conor’s jumpers, shorts and hoodies donning his surname was banned. The sports star challenged the ruling by stating that since he has also included his first name, this would eliminate the chances of confusion between the two businesses among the consumers.

However, European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) has dismissed his appeal, stating that the goods are identical. It was further held that regardless of difference in their beginning, one cannot rule out the similarities that are evoked by the common mark “McGregor, and which is similar for an average consumer.
