Nike settles lawsuit with MSCHF Product Studio over ‘Satan Shoes’

By Pallavi Paul

Nike has settled its lawsuit of trademark infringement against MSCHF Product Studio over the black-and-red devil themed sneakers, which cost around $1,018 a pair. ‘Satan Shoes’ are customized versions of the Nike Air Max 97 sneakers, containing the ‘swoosh’ logo with mid-soles containing a drop of ‘human blood’ and printed with ‘Luke 10:18’ a reference from the Biblical verse that refers to Satan’s fall from heaven. The release of ‘Satan Shoes’ last month received backlash and invited a lot of controversies following which Nike immediately sued MSCHF Product Studio.

The shoes were brought out as a collaboration with Rapper Lil Nas X’s last song and video, Montero (Call me by your name). Only 666 pairs of shoes were made but on filing the infringement suit, a judge halted the shoes from being shipped to customers. MSCHF agreed to settle the lawsuit stating that it has already achieved its ‘artistic purpose’ and that the shoes will continue to represent the ideals of ‘equality and inclusion’. Reacting to the controversy Rapper Lil Nas X who was not a defendant to the infringement suit took to twitter to express his anger and stated ‘Freedom of Expression has gone out of the window.’
