Salooni Maize to soon get GI (Geographical Indication) recognition

Salooni valley in Chambha district will soon get recognition at both international and national level. Salooni Maize is the second product after Rumal in Chambha district, to obtain Geographical Indication (GI). DC Rana, Deputy Commissioner, stated that a proposal was received by Salooni White Maize Organization for the registration of traditional varieties of maize. The matter has now been referred to the GI Registry office at Chennai and it is expected that farmers in the valley will get GI tag for the same shortly.

The traditional varieties of Salooni maize including Hatchchi Kukdi, Ratti and Chitku which are unique to Salooni tehsil of the Chambha district are sown in 158 hectares and grown widely across 12 panchayats. Panchayats of the valley include Bhandal, Sanuh, Kihar, Dand, Pichhla Diur, Kandhwara, Bhadela, Khadjauta, Himgiri, Panjei, Kilod and Suri panchayats. The GI tagging of Salooni maize would open more up new vistas for trade for the Chambha which is an aspirational district of Himachal Pradesh.
